Alaina Hawley is the HR Lead for Facebook Australia

Alaina’s passion lies in building meaningful and inclusive internal communities. Her role at Facebook sees her contribute at both a hands-on and strategic level to foster an innovative and transformative culture at scale.

She partners with business leaders across APAC to drive an effective People strategy with a focus on Talent Management, Leadership Development and optimal Organizational Design.

Prior to joining Facebook Alaina spent 10 years within various HR leadership roles in the Digital and Media industry.

Q&A with Alaina

What was your first HR role and in which industry?

HR Assistant in a bread factory, true story! Part of a year in industry during Uni and being thrown into a manufacturing environment was a great way to immerse myself in the fundamentals of HR, it was also a really interesting insight into what it meant for people to come to work where they had jobs vs careers. The complementary bread was also a bonus!

How or why did you become a HR professional?

My mum. As I was choosing my final subjects at school and asking myself the hardest question of all ‘what do I want to do with my life?’, my mum happened to hear a HR Leader speak at a conference. She was so inspired that she came back and told me all about it, and the rest is history!

What is your view of human resources as a business function?

I almost don’t see HR as its own function, done well it’s a true partnership with the business and should be front and centre contributing to all leadership decisions.

What are some of the challenges in moving into HR Management and above?

Complexity and responsibility. The challenges business’ are facing are diverse depending on the industry, market and location context. Our roles play such an important part in enabling people and organisations to thrive with purpose and navigate change.

Any advice for the next generation of Aspiring HR Leaders?

Be brave and bold, ask lots of questions, challenge what’s gone before and keep believing in what you do. The impact of our roles can sometimes be hard to measure and the work we do is often behind the scenes but never forget how important it is.

What do you enjoy doing during your free time?

I love the outdoors; my happy place is the Hunter Valley, where I can combine all of my favourite things; long walks with my husband and our gorgeous dog Champ, working up an appetite for great food and wine!
